How to Repair Torn Banners
A torn corner or blown-out grommet does not mean the end of a banner. Here is how to make a permanent field repair with BravoTabs and Clear PowerTape in under five minutes.

Most banner failures start at the grommet, and most failed grommets look the same: a small tear that started at the edge of the metal ring and spread outward with every gust of wind. The repair strategy is straightforward — bridge the torn area with a new, larger attachment point that spreads the load beyond the damaged zone.
Overview
BravoTabs are adhesive grommet replacements with a much larger footprint than a standard metal grommet. When applied over a torn corner, the tab covers and bridges the damaged area, bonding to undamaged banner material on both sides of the tear. The punched hole through the tab creates a new hanging point that is tested to 108 mph — often stronger than the original grommet-only finish.
Why Banners Tear
Wind creates oscillating loads on a hanging banner. Each gust cycles the material at the grommet hole — the metal ring acts as a stress concentrator, and after enough load cycles the vinyl cracks at the ring edge. Once a small tear forms, it propagates rapidly. A 1″ tear can become a 6″ tear in a single windstorm.
Under-tightened banners are the most vulnerable. A banner with slack flogs — it whips back and forth rather than holding taut — which multiplies the fatigue cycles per wind event. The fix is both the repair itself and re-tensioning the banner after the repair.
The BravoTab Solution
A BravoTab is 2.5″ wide — roughly four times the footprint of a standard #2 grommet. When centered over a torn corner, it covers the entire damaged area and bonds to intact banner material beyond the tear margins. This larger bonding area means the hanging load is spread over far more banner material than the original grommet allowed.
Step 1 — Clean the Torn Area

Remove any loose material, dirt, or residue from the torn area. If the tear has frayed edges, trim them with scissors so the surface is as flat as possible. Wipe the area with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely — adhesive will not bond reliably to oily or contaminated surfaces.
Step 2 — Apply BravoTabs

Peel the liner from a BravoTab and center it over the torn area. Apply with firm thumb pressure from the center outward — pressing from center to edge forces air out from under the tab rather than trapping it. For tears larger than 1″, apply a second tab on the back of the banner, directly behind the first, to sandwich the torn area from both sides.
Step 3 — Punch Hole

Use a PowerPunch or EZ Punch to create a clean hanging hole through the center of the BravoTab. Press straight down and perpendicular to the banner surface. The hole should be positioned so the rope or tie can pull straight through — angled holes allow the hardware to lever against the tab edge under load.
Step 4 — Reinforce with Clear PowerTape

Apply Clear PowerTape along the banner edge from tab to tab. This reinforces the entire edge against secondary tears and seals the back of each tab bond. For banners with tears on multiple corners, run PowerTape along the full perimeter — this is also an opportunity to re-evaluate the overall condition of the banner.
Field Repairs
Keep a small repair kit in your vehicle or installation bag: 4–6 BravoTabs, a 6-foot length of Clear PowerTape pre-rolled on a cardboard core, and an EZ Punch. With these three items you can repair any banner in the field without returning to the shop. The repair is permanent — not a temporary patch that needs a follow-up visit.
FAQ
How long will the repair last?
A properly applied BravoTab repair holds as long as the banner material itself. The adhesive is permanent and outdoor-rated. If the banner tears again, it will tear in a new location — not through the repaired area.
Can I repair a banner that has torn all the way to the edge?
Yes. Apply BravoTabs on both the front and back of the banner, sandwiching the torn edge between them. This stabilizes the tear and creates a new attachment point regardless of how far the original tear extended.
Should I repair a banner or replace it?
Repair if: the tear is isolated to one or two corners, the print is still clear and readable, and the banner has been in service less than 18 months. Replace if: the print is faded, there are multiple large tears, or the vinyl has become brittle and cracked from UV exposure.
Can I repair a banner with a grommet machine after tearing?
Only if enough undamaged material remains around the tear to support a new grommet hole (at least 1″ of intact vinyl on all sides of the new hole). In most field repair situations, this is not practical — BravoTabs are faster and do not require intact material around the hole.
